(1) Make sure the place where you get your MRI from is in-network. Don’t wait until the day before to check and then realize that your college’s MRI center isn’t in-network and that you have to go to a different MRI place. It makes scheduling that new appointment so much more difficult because you want to find out what happpened right away and not deal with more logistical stuff. (2) Prepare yourself to be completely unmoving for like 20 minutes. You will want to move - don’t! And also prepare yourself for increasing pain throughout the MRI if your knee isn’t used to being fully straight (@me!!). (3) Have a genre of music in mind. Most places will let you listen to music and being able to listen to Christian music (my choice!) was a nice distraction from all the banging of the machine. (4) Ask for your CD right away! For me I was able to get my CD from the MRI place right afterwards and now the UChicago doctors can look at it on Wednesday and I’ll learn my results ASAP. Plus, the radiologist at the MRI place will also have a copy so he or she can send me their notes also. Basically you get two opinions and get to hear your diagnosis sooner rather than later! (5) If you recognize the MRI person from the last time you gave your MRI, be the appropriate amount of friendly but maybeeeee don’t make that final joke when he says “it was nice seeing you again” and you say “and I hope to never see you again!” *insert nervous laughter as you realize it came out harsher than intended* when you were just trying to lighten the mood.
And those are all my tips as accumulated from my three MRIs I've had in the past two years. I just had my third MRI today so the most recent one is still fresh in my memory but shoutout to my amazing mother who helped call the MRI place while I was in my Monday classes, to Anicia, the UChicago trainer, who dealt with me switching MRI appointments and then asking her to send clinical notes to the new MRI place on such short notice, and to Kendria, the lovely front desk lady at MRI River North who fit me into the Tuesday MRI appointment schedule with less than 48 hours notice. Now we just wait to find out!
